Savoy London and Opera " The Mikado"at Savoy theatre

I am waiting for new Savoy London's reopen this summer 2009 after their renovation. The last time I was there in 2007 just before their closing due to their new construction. The historical Savoy London.I had a lovely lunch with chilled white wine with salmon cake.Very English.Nice service by charming English restaurant staffs.

Savoy London-their cocktail bar might have historical menues as well as their tea room.I believe in that Ritz founderhad used to work for Savoy and after then made his own hotel.HIstory says. And when we talk about Savoy London hotel, we Japanese should know the historical English musical late 19 century.

The Mikado.I love history and historical beautiful places with modern touch. And of coures I am very surprised to see how Japanese culture was introduced by those English translated musical to Europe last century. And still the song is sung at various occasions by different opera singers and oriental lovers.

HOtel was built just next to Savoy theatre 1889, then theatre was built in 1881,
Opened in 1889, it was built by Richard D'Oyly Carte, the owner of the adjacent Savoy Theatre, and designed by architect Thomas Edward Collcutt, who also designed the Wigmore Hall. Carte chose the name "Savoy" to memorialize the history of the property: In 1246, King Henry III granted the land to Peter, Count of Savoy, the uncle of his wife, Eleanor of Provence. The Savoy Palace, a very large and elegant palace, was built on the property. It later passed to John of Gaunt, 2nd Duke of Lancaster, and was burned during the Peasants' Revolt in 1381. Carte eventually bought part of the property to build the Savoy Theatre (1881) specifically for the production of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, of which he was the producer.

Savoy Hotel, Strand entrance, 1911The hotel was built on a plot of land, next to the Savoy Theatre, that Carte originally purchased to house an electrical generator for the theatre (built in 1881), which was the first public building in the world to be lit entirely by electricity. The construction of the hotel took five years and was financed by the profits from the Gilbert and Sullivan partnership, particularly from producing The Mikado. It was the first hotel lit by electric lights and the first with electric elevators

The Mikado from Savoy theatre had influenced European and new world. In UK, USA and Australia, THis historical opera musical is performed in different versions and ways.It is always interesting to see how European or Angrosaxon non Japanese watch our strange unique culture.I become nationalist even more whenver I see all those performance and feel like dancing just like them.Of course putting on silk kimono with those traditional Japanese hairstyle Mage.It will be fun.IN fact they caputure our feature really.

This classic play should be remembered.Topsy Turvy is very very interesting to me.Part one.Real japanese actors and actresses are used in this English movie. In those days everything could have looked like strange to European.Just after opening our country after 250 years closure to the world during shogun era.

Part two

My favorate scene from last century.Classics."Japanese Yes!japanese No!"My favorite scene from Mike Leigh's "Topsy-Turvy"

1885. Gilbert and Sullivan are in rehearsals for the Mikado, when Gilbert (Jim Broadbent) invites four Japanese guests from a traveling exhibit to watch the proceedings.

D'Auban's parting shot .Can you imagine how they had produced this Japanese opera in 1885?Their image to Japanese women in those days were reflected. In fact we are same as before fundamentary and have still Japanese code so called in Japan. No matter which addidas shoes or Nike shoes put on and walk naked for example.
Last the mikado performed by men probably can be captured well so called japanese woman style.at least on the surface.just like how sushi look like all over the world.
