Bjarne Riesto

He made his dreams come true...

Wind blowing. Temperature well below zero. Open water. Many layers of clothes. Being a photographer in arctic climate Bjarne Riesto accepts the conditions.

A picture paints a thousand words
He followed his dream and decided to start working on his own. It was a surprise even to him that he became successful.

Bjarne Riesto(44) lives in his hometown Vadsø in Finnmark at the Norwegian border to Russia. Vadsø with only 6000 inhabitants is a small market for a photographer specializing on nature. He had no support when de decided to quit his job as a computer engineer. Five years ago no one wanted to promote his idea.

The perfect spot

We had driven only a couple of kilometres out of town when Bjarne found the perfect spot. For weeks the temperature had been low and the wind had been strong. Nature had created beautiful sculptures of ice at the seashore.

Walking on ice is dangerous and the stones are slippery. As a matter of standard procedure Bjarne prepares for the first shots. Five years ago he walked out of his office never to return as a computer engineer. He made a decision to make his hobby as a way of living.

- I did like my work. It was frightening to leave. At the same time I felt a sudden freedom. I had to follow my dreams. To be honest I didn’t believe it would be possible to earn a living working as a photographer, but at old age I did not want to regret I did not try, says Bjarne Riesto.

Fascinating light
Light captured by Riesto
The arctic light has fascinated photographers from all over the world. Bjarne believes he knows why.

- The sun is lower to the horizon in the arctic areas than in the rest of the world, which is good for taking photos. Another advantage in this area is that there are no high mountains, which means that light flows in from all directions. In addition the air is not polluted.

The photographer has his own webpage www.riesto.no which is an important platform to market his products. He has clients all over the world. Architects in Australia bought his pictures to find inspiration how to design the new opera house in Oslo in an arctic spirit. He also sells his pictures at exhibitions and on the local market.

- My pictures are very personal, and I find it very hard to say they are good. That is why I am not good at marketing. The customers comes to me, I don’t go to them. That is my problem. But anyway I am glad I have been able to make a living, says Bjarne Riesto.

The sky changes from grey to red and yellow

Bjarne looks at the sky. Suddenly the sky has changed from grey to red and yellow colours. He moves his camera as close to the sea as possible trying to avoid the waves destroying his equipment.

- My best experiences are weeks in the mountains concentrating on taking pictures, for instance in Sarek National Park in Northern Sweden. If my pictures stimulate people’s interest in nature and people’s interest in preserving nature I am happy. I do not take pictures with the intention of promoting tourism or any other business, says the man who made his dream come true.

JEG TENKTE PÅ KRAFTEN HAVET HAR ETTER TUSEN ÅR MOT SAMME STRAND
PÅ ALT SOM VAR.
OG NÅR DU HAR STÅTT LENGE NOK DEN SISTE SJOEN
SOM VIL NÅ DEG TIL SLUTT......
